전에도 몇차례 소개한 적이 있는 Project for Public Space (PPS)의 최근 활동을 한번 볼까요? PPS가 최근에 저에게 보내온 뉴스레터에는 훈련세미나를 개최한다고 소개하고 있는데요 어떤 세미나냐구요? 너무 재미있는 세미나예요 4월 22일부터 23일까지 이틀에 걸쳐 개최되는 것인데요 길거리를 친보행자적이고도 편리하고 또한 아름답고 우아하게 만들어보자는 것이지요 사실 길거리 하나에도 여러가지 이슈가 있는 법이지요 길거리와 고속도로를 어떻게 지역에 도움이 되게 디자인할 것인가, 보행자나 자전거에게 편리하도록 설계.변화시킬 것인가. 어떻게 스마트하게 공간의 사용하고 교통시설의 투자를 효율적으로 할 것인가, 거리를 하나의 공간으로서 디자인하는 도구와 기술을 어떻게 활용할 것인가, 지역의 참여를 어떻게 이끌어내고 조직할 것인가, 교통기관으로 하여금 어떻게 더 나은 결과를 만들어내게 할 것인가, 어떻게 파킹시스템을 개선할 것인가, 새로운 교통계획의 패러다임을 만들어낼 것인가 - - - 이런 이슈들이 포함되어 있는 것이지요 사실 우리나라의 도로를 한번 보면 한심합니다 아무도 챙겨보지 않은 듯 엉망이지요. 보행자로서는 걷기에 고통스럽기만 합니다 여러 종류의 시설들이 부분별하고 어지럽게 늘려있구요 아래 그 기사의 일부를 보기로 하구요 (영어를 그대로 두겠습니다) 더 자세한 것은 직접 다음 사이트에서 확인해 보시지요 희망제작소에서도 한때 공간연구소라는 것을 만들어 간판개선이라거나 공공미술, 공공디자인 등에 대해 연구하고 훈련하는 기관이 있었습니다. 희망아카데미에서는 몇차례 공무원들을 상대로 하는 공공디자인 교육프로그램을 진행한 바도 있었습니다. 이 기사를 보면서 좀 더 체계적인 공공디자인, 보다 더 전문화되고 세분화된 훈련 프로그램이 필요하다는 것을 절실하게 느꼈습니다. April 22-23, 2010 "If we can develop and design streets so that they are wonderful, fulfilling places to be ? community-building places, attractive for all people ? then we will have successfully designed about one-third of the city directly and will have had an immense impact on the rest.“  With this idea in mind, PPS offers “Streets as Places,” a two-day transportation & Placemaking training seminar intended to introduce participants to new ways of thinking about streets and how Placemaking can be used to build great streets and great communities. Presentations and discussions will focus on how roadways and transit facilities can be designed and managed to benefit communities, while also serving mobility needs. Practical tools for assessing a variety of street typologies and case studies of cities and towns that have moved beyond simply trying to address mobility to building community will be presented, and participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences with each other.
